The smile that hovered around her lips as she twirled before the mirror was one of excited anticipation. The short indigo fitted dress showed off the tan color of her skin and the elegance of her long legs. Her shoulders were bare, except for the three tiny spaghetti straps that began above each breast, traveled over her shoulders, then crossed her bare back and fastened at her sides. The strappy high-heeled silver-toned slippers served to emphasize her height and were the same shade as her evening bag. Her dark brown, wavy hair was loose and just brushed her shoulders, and her only jewelry was a pair of diamond earrings which had been a twenty-first birthday present from her parents. She knew that she looked good. She felt great.

Shari had spent the previous day doing some more sightseeing, then had shared a relaxed dinner with Gaston. He had taken her to an Indian restaurant where she had her first taste of roti, a soft wafer-thin bread wrapped around a delicious savory filling of curried meat, mangoes and vegetables. Gaston had been charming, and when he suggested going to a pub afterward for a few drinks she had consented without a qualm. As they sat at the bar and Shari polished off her second piña colada, she demurred.

“This rum is going straight to my head. I’ll have juice from now on.”

“No, no, no. You must have something more interesting—like this one.” He pointed to the list and Shari spluttered when she read his recommendation.

“Absolutely not. You pervert.”

“Maybe this one, then?” The dark eyes danced at her.”

“‘Sex in the Sand’? That’s even worse.” She found herself giggling. “Orange juice, please. If you have plans to get me drunk and take advantage of me, perish the though. I have a hollow leg.”

“But you said...”

“Yeah. I did. And you fell right into my trap.”

“I don’t take advantage of women.” He was smiling into her eyes, his face close in the gloom. “I don’t have to. They take advantage of me.”

“Ah, such modesty. Well, you can relax. I won’t take advantage of you.”

His comically crestfallen look sent her into giggles again. She could not recall the last time she had giggled before coming on this vacation. Gaston seemed to have that effect on her.

Afterward he had driven to a lookout above Port of Spain and Shari had looked down on the lights of the city and at the ships anchored in the harbor. She had felt a few misgivings when Gaston first pulled off the road and switched off the engine, but he behaved quite circumspectly, although he had eyes for only Shari only and barely glanced at the spectacle before them.

When he took her back to her apartment, however, he embraced her at the door and kissed her lightly on the lips.

“Oh, Shari,” he had murmured in her ear. “You’ll be seeing a lot of me, you know. I’ll keep you in Trinidad; you won’t escape,” he said in a lightly bantering tone.

“Oh, bugger off, Gaston.
